Indtroduction

We welcome outstanding and talented prospective graduate students from around the nation and the world to apply for Graduate Studies. Besides national students, KFUPM currently has international graduate students from 28 different nationalities. This adds to the richness & diversity of the academic and research environment at KFUPM.

The University currently offers 30 Master programs and 10 Doctoral programs in a full range of traditional disciplines, as well as interdisciplinary programs that anticipate market trends and respond to national needs. KFUPM provides full MS and PhD scholarships for distinguished graduate applicants who demonstrate high potential for conducting original research in the fields of Engineering, Sciences and Business.

Online Application

All graduate admissions are administered by the Deanship of Graduate Studies (DGS). Candidates who intend to enroll in graduate programs at the University need to submit an online application available on the website of DGS on the linkhttp://www.kfupm.edu.sa/gs/application/preonline.asp. The online application is available only during the application periods according to the posted application deadlines on the linkhttp://www.kfupm.edu.sa/gs/main/deadlines.asp . The graduate admission is open twice a year for the two semesters: The Fall Term (usually starting in September) and the Spring Term (usually starting in February).

PhD Scholarship in Physical Chemistry and Spectroscopy

A 3-year PhD scholarship in physical chemistry and spectroscopy is available at the Department of Chemistry under the supervision of Assistant Professor René Wugt Larsen.

Project description
One of the major challenges for the physical sciences is to explore how the macroscopic properties of condensed phases, materials and biological systems emerge from complex non-covalent interactions at the microscopic level. The interplay between the different classes of non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, dispersion interaction and steric repulsion emerges already on the level of isolated weakly bound molecular clusters. The PhD project will be focusing on vibrational spectroscopy of weakly bound molecular clusters between simple organic compounds and water embedded in inert condensed phases and isolated in supersonic jet expansions at low temperatures. Hydrogen bonds between organic molecules and water are of particular interest, ranging from fundamental questions concerning conformational isomerism and relative hydrogen donor and acceptor preferences which are responsible for the microscopic origin of anomalous thermodynamic properties such as heats of mixing, volume contractions and azeotropic behavior of liquid mixtures to more applied questions related to separation technologies for industrial production of biofuels and chemicals.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a master’s degree in chemistry and should be confident in English, both written and spoken.

The fellowships are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in the Chemistry, Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering PhD programme at DTU. The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are designed to promote capacity building within organisations in 61 countries by providing training and education to mid-career staff. The NFP is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.

The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower within a wide range of governmental, private and non-governmental organisations. This is done by offering fellowships to mid-career professionals to improve the capacity of their employing organisations.

NFP sub-programmes

The NFP offers you three sub-programmes to choose from:

To be eligible for an NFP fellowship you must:

be a mid-career professional with at least three years' relevant work experience;
be a national of, and working and living in one of the countries on the NFP country list valid at the time of application;
be nominated by your employer, who pledges to continue paying your salary and guarantees that you will be able to return to the same or an equivalent position at the end of your fellowship period;
have been unconditionally admitted by a Dutch institution to one of the Master’s degree programmes or Short courses on the 2012-2013 course list, or have agreed upon a PhD research proposal with the Dutch institution. Project Title: Lowering the operating temperature of catalysts for diesel particulat destruction

Project Description: Current technologies for controlling the emission of particulate from diesel vehicles rely on the reaction of NOx with the carbon content of the particles. However, the exhaust produced by passenger cars is often not hot enough, or does not contain enough NOx, to remove all the particulate. The aim of this project will be to improve the performance of known catalysts for the alternative (but slower) C+O2 reaction, allowing it to take place at typical car-exhaust temperatures. The major challenge will be to understand the mechanism by which gas-phase O2 is activated by the catalyst and transferred to the particulate, before the practical problem of ensuring effective contact between the catalyst and the immobilised particulate can be addressed.

This is a Cardiff University President's Research Scholarship. The award includes full UK/EU tuition fees plus a doctoral stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£13,590 p.a. for 2010/11, updated each year).

European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis – Erasmus Mundus AFEPA

Course description:
The European Master in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Policy Analysis aims at providing a high quality education in designing and assessing public policies targeted to the agricultural and food sector as well as the rural environment. This European Master responds to the increasing need to better understand and anticipate the various and often complex socio-economic and environmental effects of these policies either in a functioning market economy as in the European Union or in economies in a development or transition phase. The European Master offers a two-year academic curriculum with integrated and advanced theoretical, methodological and empirical courses in economics and quantitative methods as well as in agricultural, food and environmental sciences, agricultural and trade policy, environmental and natural resource policy, rural development policy and agribusiness management and market analysis. To connect theory and methodology to practice, a problem solving project is developed and presented as a master thesis at the end of the two-year curriculum.

The European Master is jointly organised by five leading European educational and research institutions: the Corvinius University of Budapest (CUB) in Hungary, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Sweden, the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms Universität Bonn (UBonn) in Germany, the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain. These five partner universities are recognised worldwide for the quality of their educational programme and scientific achievements in agricultural, environmental and economic sciences. The required 120 ECTS credit points are structured into three blocks: a minimum of two semesters of studies (55 ECTS) at a first partner university, as well as two semesters of studies (60 ECTS) at a second partner university, and two joint summer schools (5 ECTS) at partner universities. The language of instruction and examination is English for most of the courses in three partner universities while it is either French at UCL or Spanish at UPC for most of the courses. The Master degree is awarded as a double degree from the two home and host universities.
This European Master is accessible to candidates holding a bachelor degree or a recognized equivalent academic degree with a minimum of 180 ECTS or 3 years university study from an accredited institution, with sufficient undergraduate training in economics and agricultural or environmental sciences, with an excellent scholastic average, and with fluency in English but also French or Spanish if attending either UCL or UPC respectively.

Recipients of this European Master are qualified to understand the fundamentals of public policies oriented to the agricultural and food sector, rural areas and natural resources, develop and use quantitative methods to perform rigorous socio-economic and environmental assessment of these public policies, and provide sound and relevant policy recommendations for a more sustainable development of this sector and rural areas. They are qualified to take responsibilities in international, national and regional agencies, non-governmental organisations, consultancy firms, professional organisations and private companies.

Swiss Government Scholarship Programme

The Swiss Government through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) grants a limited number of scholarships to developing countries, among which Indonesia is included. These scholarships are offered to Indonesian POSTGRADUATE students wishing to undertake research or study in a master programme at a Swiss university or Federal Institute of Technology as mentioned on page 5. Priority will be given to research fellowships.

The duration of grant is basically for the nine-month academic year (always from September to June. It is not possible to start the scholarship in the Spring semester or any other time in the year). It can be extended up to 12 months. The extension request will be analyzed according to the FCS criteria.

Overview

IIEF in coorperation with the East-West Center is giving Master Degre Scholarship Program for individuals who are interested in joining the education and research program of University of Hawaii, Manoa to obtain their Masters Degree.

This scholarship is available for Masters Degree (24 months) and Doctorate Degree (48 months). Through this program, scholars will have the opportunity to join research projects in their field of studies such as economy, politics and security, environmental, population and health, education as well as development in Asia Pacific region. Annual renewal of the MUIS Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarship is subject to satisfactory performance in the Macquarie University degree program. The MUIS Merit Scholarship is a single scholarship and not available to be renewed.

Peat and wind farm construction: geo-environmental consequences.

The Scottish peat wetlands are experiencing unprecedented development in the drive to exploit wind in the renewable energy supply mix. They are also important carbon sinks with an ecology that is easily disrupted by construction activities.

The principal aim of this studentship is to explore the extent of decomposition and the geomechanical consequences induced by construction activities on the peat.

The successful candidate will undertake a novel programme of geotechnical laboratory testing on peat soils. He/she will work closely with colleagues at the James Hutton Institute, where a parallel programme of work looking at the carbon consequences of the same construction activity is underway.

The candidate should also demonstrate an awareness of the environmental issues surrounding current construction activities on the peat lands in Scotland and further afield.

IntelliBike: development of an intelligent tool for the monitoring of off-road cycle path running surface deterioration

Highway pavement survey methodologies are primarily concerned with engineering assessments that relate specifically to motorised vehicles. This approach has neglected the need to consider the requirement to monitor the infrastructure from the cyclists’ perspective. Cyclists are more sensitive to uneven running surfaces, standing water (and ice in winter months), excessive or overhanging vegetation, poor sight-lines, congested bicycle-vehicle interfaces and debris on the running surface. In relation to highways, what might be a small pothole to a motorised vehicle may potentially be a cause of damage or an accident to a cyclist. However, if the vehicle collecting pavement condition data is a motorised vehicle, it is unlikely to be able to access cycle paths to identify issues that are potentially dangerous to cyclists.

Cost Analysis for Affordable Housing

Affordable housing, due to the current economic and population pressure, will continue to be a growing sector for the foreseeable future. Developing and implementing efficient, sustainable construction techniques is critical to achieving the low carbon thresholds identified in the Sullivan Report and the now implemented Part 7 of the Building Standards in Scotland. The Centre for Offsite Construction and Innovative Structures (COCIS) is currently working extensively with industry partners to integrate a supply chain to deliver a low carbon affordable solution to meet these requirements, “FUTURE:affordable”.

The PhD research will seek to deliver a model for conducting cost analysis so that the cost impact of integrating new components, products, details or technologies can be determined.

The PhD student will have to have good communication skills and be capable of working closely with a range of building and construction professionals and academics in order to assist the evolution of a system solution which is viable in terms of cost structure.

Overview

The Japanese Government(Monbukagakusho) offers a scholarship in selected fields, called the Special Scholarship for International Doctoral Programs. The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University will accept eight new Ph.D. course students under this program from the year 2012. This program has several attractive features—for example, the official language will be English(Japanese language skill will not be required); and the fact that all tuition fees will be waived. Interested applicants should carefully read the rules and conditions in the guidelines for admission before submitting their applications. Selections will be by Kyoto University, with successful students recommended to the Monbukagakusho as candidates for the scolarship.

Detail and ELigibility

1. Eligibility: Applicant must be from a country with which Japan official diplomatic relations has, and must be currently studying/working outside of Japan. Those who are currently staying in Japan are not eligible for this program.

2. Age: Applicant must be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2012.

3. Academic qualifications: Applicant must satisfy one of the following conditions by the end of September 2012.

i. Holds a master’s level degree.

ii. Has completed 16 years of school education in a foreign country and subsequently spent at least two years conducting research in a university, research institute, or other such facility, and is recognized through research achievements as having scholastic ability on a par with or higher than that of a person who has completed a master’s degree at a graduate school in Japan.

iii. Is recognized by the school, on the basis of individual screening ofapplication, as having scholastic ability on a par with or higher than that of a person with a master’s degree, and is at least 24 years of age.

4. Recommendation

Each applicant must be officially recommended to the president of Kyoto University by the president of the university or the dean of the faculty/graduate school of the university from which the applicant has graduated. Said university must meet the conditions mentioned in (3). In addition, any applicant who is currently working must submit an official letter of recommendation written by the head of the employing organization.

5. Physical and mental health

Applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to carry out studies at Kyoto University.

6. Language ability

Applicants must be competent in English.

7. Other conditions

i. Each admitted student must arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 7, 2012.

ii. Any applicant who is affiliated to any military entity at the end of March 2012 is ineligible.

iii. Any applicant, who receives scholarship money from his /her overnment, or from any other foundation, will not be accepted.

Details Scholarship

1. Stipend:

Approximately 156,000 yen per month. This will be provided for a maximum of 36 months, but will not be paid in cases of extended leave from academia.

2. Travel expenses:

i. To Japan

An economy-class air ticket between the international airport closest to the admitted student’s home address and Kansai International Airport will be provided.

ii. From Japan

An economy-class return air ticket home from Japan will be offered on condition that the admitted student will be leaving Japan within the last-payment month of the scholarship.

iii. School fees:

Entrance and tuition fees will be waived.

Selection and Admission

1. 1st stage selection

The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, examines the documents submitted and makes a preliminary selection. Those selected are recommended to the Japanese Government for the 2nd stage selection. Results of this selection will be conveyed to the applicants by the end of April 2012.

2.2nd stage selection

The Japanese Government examines the applications recommended by Kyoto University and decides on the final candidates for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship. Applicants will be informed of the final decision by the end of August, 2012. The Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, will send certificates of admission to the successful applicants at this time.

Two PhD Student Positions in the context of the EU project RACE.

	Two PhD student positions in Computer Science. These positions are in the area of hybrid knowledge representaiton and reasoning, planning and execution monitoring.
	About the positions. The main task of the students will be to perform world-class research on hybrid knowledge representation and reasoning, and hybrid planning and plan execution monitoring, for robotic systems. Hybrid in this context means that the robot is capable of inferring new information about its environment from a variety of information of different nature. For instance, the robot will consider flexible temporal requirements (e.g., serving food while it is warm, but not too soon after the previous course) together with causal requirements (e.g., serving a meal satisfies the goal of feeding the guests) and resource constraints (e.g., dishes from the previous course must be cleared as space must be made for the new course). Such requirements should be upheld both during planning and on-line execution monitoring. The successful candidates will be employed as PhD students with Örebro University for an expected duration of three years. They will work within the local RACE team at Örebro University, under the supervision of Prof. Alessandro Saffiotti and Dr. Federico Pecora. They will also collaborate with the other European partners in RACE, both remotely and through physical meetings and research visits. A limited amount of teaching may also be part of the PhD student’s duties. The students will receive a monthly salary adequate to the cost of living in Sweden and will be included in the Swedish social security system.
	About the RACE project. RACE, “Robustness by Autonomous Competence Enhancement”, is a European Union FP7 project. The overall aim of RACE is to develop an artificial cognitive system, embodied by a service robot, able to build a high-level understanding of the world it inhabits by storing and exploiting appropriate memories of its experiences. Experiences will be recorded internally at multiple levels: high-level descriptions in terms of goals, tasks and behaviours, and sensory and actuator skills at the lowest level. RACE will develop methods for conceptualizing acquired experiences so as to extend the robot’s planning and execution capabilities beyond preconceived situations. AASS’s role in RACE concerns (1) the development of knowledge representation and reasoning schemes suited for reasoning about multiple types of experiences; and (2) the use of this acquired and inferred knowledge for plan generation and execution. Constraint-based techniques will be explored for both representation and reasoning and planning/execution monitoring purposes, and in particular a meta-CSP approach for integrating temporal, resource, causal and spatial reasoning will be examined. The RACE consortium consists of six European partners: the University of Hamburg (Germany), the University of Leeds (UK), Örebro University (Sweden), the University of Osnabrück (Germany), the University of Aveiro (Portugal), and the technology transfer institution HITeC e.V. (Germany).

	One PhD student position in Computer Science. This position is in the area of integration of robots and smart environments, with specific emphasis on applications to elderly care.

A unique feature of this infrastructure will be that it will span across several environments, ranging from homes to streets and public places, in order to provide ubiquitous assistance to senior citizens. AASS will also supervise the development of one of the project’s two testing sites: a smart apartment inside a large residential facility intended for senior citizens. The Food Security Center (FSC) is a university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the pro-gram “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation”, which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. FSC’s mission is to make effective and innova-tive scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner research and education organizations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development and research organizations. Scholarship description

FSC awards 10 scholarships for PhD students from developing countries (see OECD DAC list) for a period of 36 months, beginning September 01, 2012 (with a month German language course). The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to food security related issues. The successful candidates will receive scholarships for participating in the PhD program “Global Food Security” to conduct their doctorates.

The scholarship is given for a stay at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The monthly grant is EUR 1,000 (for the time in Germany, EUR 500 for the time of the field research). In addition, FSC pays for traveling to/from Hohenheim. Health insurance and other costs must be paid for from the stipend.

Selection criteria

Besides the general selection criteria for the PhD program “Global Food Security” (see announce-ment of the PhD program “Global Food Security”), the following criteria have to be met additionally, if applying for an “Excellence scholarship”:

- Latest academic degree completed no more than 6 years prior to start of scholarship;

- Indication for return to his/her home country and institute;

- Be a national of a developing country according to OECD DAC list.

Application

The applicant has to submit the application documents for the PhD program “Global Food Security” and indicate in FSC’s application form, whether s/he applies for an “Excellence scholarship”. In ad-dition to the general application, the applicant has to provide proof regarding the additional selection criteria mentioned above. The deadline for the application for an “Excellence scholarship” is October 26th, 2011.

PhD Scholarship in Biomechanics / Biorobotics, Bielefeld University, Germany

A PhD scholarship in Biomechanics/Biorobotics has been announced under the EU-FP7 program at Bielefeld University, Germany. In the EU-funded FP7-Project EMICAB (Embodied Motion Intelligence for Cognitive, Autonomous Robots), the University of Bielefeld (Germany) invites applications for a part-time position as research assistant (PhD student) for the duration of three years. The positions are remunerated 50% of E13 (according to TV-L West, German public service). The salary scale typically ranges between 19200 and 22400 Eur p.a., depending on work experience.

The positions on offer are embedded into an excellent interdisciplinary environment with intensive contacts to various facilities and workgroups of Bielefeld University. In particular, this includes the Center of Excellence in Cognitive Interaction Technology, CITEC. The EU-project (www.emicab.eu) as a whole is formed by the Biomechatronics lab and the Neuroethology lab of Bielefeld University (coordinator), a Systems Engineering lab at the University of Catania, Italy, a Sensor Technology lab at the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg, and a Neurogenetics lab at the University of Mainz, Germany.

Goal of the EMICAB-project is the abstraction of neuro-ethological and neuro-genetic research results in the context of autonomous walking movements to generate artificial neural network models for intelligent behaviour. In parallel, a novel six-legged walking robot is being assembled and – within the project – expanded by rich body sensorisation and additional actuation.

The position is in the area of Neuroethology/Biomechanics with a relation to Biorobotics. The successful candidate should hold a master or diploma degree, preferably in biology or neuroscience. Advanced experimental and theoretical skills in Neurobiology (sensorimotor systems) and/or Biomechanics (whole-body kinematics, force measurements) are advantageous as well as sound experience in the analysis of multi-dimensional data. Candidates with a background in a related area within the computer sciences (e.g. bio-inspired robotics) are also encouraged to apply. Participation in administrative and organizational tasks of the EU-project is also expected. The position is suited to conduct a PhD-project.

Informatics International Master’s Scholarships
The School of Informatics will offer up to 10 Master’s scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic session. Each will have a value of £1,000 and will be tenable for one academic year.
Eligibility
The scholarships will be awarded to international (non-EU) students who are accepted for admission on a full-time basis for an eligible postgraduate Master’s programme.
The scholarship will be awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2:1 honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent.
In addition to the above academic qualifications, the selection panel will also take into account the financial circumstances of applicants to ensure that as far as possible a student’s financial situation does not impede a university education. World Press Institute Fellowships for Journalists, USA

The World Press Institute Fellowship is offered to 10 journalists from countries around the world. It provides immersion into the governance, politics, business, media, journalistic ethics and culture of the United States for experienced international journalists, through a demanding schedule of study, travel and interviews throughout the country.

The 2011 program will begin in mid August and end in mid-October. The fellows will spend a month in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, and then travel to several U.S. cities, including New York and Washington, D.C., for briefings, interviews and visits. They will returned to Minnesota for the final week of the program. See the 2010 Schedule for information on the 2010 fellowship and example of WPI events.

Journalism — in particular, the role and responsibilities of a free press in a democracy— is the primary focus of the WPI fellowship program. First-hand knowledge of the complexity and diversity of life in the U.S. is an equally important goal. Access is the key. Over the term of the fellowship, WPI fellows gain access to a broad range of individuals and institutions ranging from the world renowned to the ordinary.

Eligibility:

At least five (5) years full-time employment in print, broadcast, or online journalism.
Journalists can work for news or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio, television, web sites, online publications or magazines of general public interest.
Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists and broadcast producers are also eligible.
Those who supervise journalists are eligible providing that they also have at least five years as a working journalist.

Potential for leadership

Who is eligible?

Any non U.S. journalist working outside of the United States with at least five years of professional journalistic experience in any medium. The program is open to journalists and photojournalists from newspapers, newsmagazines, wire services, radio, television and online news organizations.

Are there minimum and maximum age limits for WPI Fellows?

No.

Are freelancers eligible for the program?

Yes, as long as they meet the minimal requirement of five years’ experience and are currently working as a journalist.

Are Fellows paid a stipend?

IRP Fellows receive a modest per diem to cover such things as meals. Hotel accommodations and fellowship -related travel are paid for.

Are WPI Fellows required to produce news stories during the fellowship?

Yes. Each WPI Fellow is expected to write for the World Press Institute Reports (blog) and produce up to three news story for WPI’s online partners during the program. It is up to each Fellow and his or her news organization whether they will produce articles for publication back home.

Does the program provide health insurance coverage for Fellows?

Yes. It is basic policy that covers emergency care but not such things as elective surgery or dental care.

Can spouses or families accompany the fellows?

Not during the fellowship program.

There is a new organization as non-Europeans who have spent more than 12 months in an eligible applicant country in the last 5 years as well as European students can also receive scholarships.
Two different categories
If you are a non-European student, and if you have are not resident nor have carried out your main activity for more than 12 months in an eligible applicant country* in the last 5 years, you can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. These scholarships are granted on merit, based on the excellence of your application.
The amount of the scholarship is €23,500 per academic year (a total of €47,000 for the duration of the MACLANDS Master course, i.e. 24 months). The scholarship covers your MACLANDS registration fees, travel, housing and living costs.
CATEGORY B
If you do not fulfil the Category A criteria, either because you are an European or because you have spent more than 12 months in the last 5 years in one of an eligible applicant country, you can benefit from a category B scholarship. The amount of the scholarship is 8500 €/year:

6000 € for daily expenses
from 2500 € as a contribution to registration fees.

Master Scholarships in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (MEEES), Erasmus Mundus

The MEEES programme is an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course, that aims to provide higher-level education in the field of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. Graduate students involved in this Erasmus Mundus Masters course have the possibility of following a 18-month MSc programmes on either Earthquake Engineering or Engineering Seismology. In addition, the proposed EM Masters course envisages also the possibility of students following a 18-month study programme that leads to the attainment of a Masters degree on Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology.
If following the Engineering Seismology option, students will acquire the ability to design, execute and evaluate assessments of seismic hazard for site-specific engineering projects, for earthquake loss assessments, and for emergency planning scenarios. Students following the Earthquake Engineering option will acquire the ability to undertake seismic design of new structures and the assessment and strengthening of existing structures. The combined option of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology will enable students to acquire technical competence in both areas.

The MEEES consortium comprises five academic institutions, namely (i) the Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS), (ii) the University of Pavia (UNIPV), (iii) the University of Patras, (iv) the University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier and (v) Middle East Technical University. It is noted, however, that the first two institutions, which are independent but are also both based in Pavia, jointly organise and run the postgraduate earthquake engineering programme in Pavia, through the Centre for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE School). Hence in subsequent sections of this website, the term ROSE School is employed to refer to the activites of IUSS/UNIPV institutions within the scope of the MEEES consortium.

Category A scholarship are available to third-country applicants. The deadline for application is the 31st of December 2010. Why Oceanography?
The oceans are connected to or drive major Earth processes, such as atmospheric and oceanic circulation, climate and weather, plate tectonics, and sustainability of marine life and resources (e.g. fisheries, oil, gas, gas hydrates). Oceans impact our present and future life and economy, even if we live far from the sea. We are entering a new era of methods for observing the ocean, but we can never measure everything everywhere continuously. Therefore, modeling of existing data and processes is necessary to obtain a broader view of present and future conditions and consequences of societal policies. We need more scientists who understand the interconnectedness of all fields of oceanography.
At Texas A&M there are opportunities to study a range of oceanographic processes from molecular scales to full ocean scales from the Pacific to Atlantic to Indian, Arctic to Antarctic, as well as the Gulf of Mexico, Galapagos Islands through a cooperative program with the Ecuadorian Navy, etc.

Where can I find an application?

Can high school, community college or graduate students apply for these scholarships?
No. Scholarships are available for students who are currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree program.
I am studying at a school outside of the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Am I eligible to apply?
No. You must be attending a school in North America in order to be eligible for our scholarship program.
Can international students apply for scholarships?
Yes. If you are currently studying in North America and meet our criteria for scholarship eligibility, you can apply regardless of your citizenship.
If I want to apply for a women’s or minority scholarship, where do I indicate that in my application?

Do I need to send an official transcript or is an unofficial transcript acceptable?

What should be included in the letter of recommendation?
We do not have a template for the letter of recommendation. Your professor should write a letter that endorses you as the best candidate to receive a scholarship. The letter should address why your professor has this opinion.

Graduate School of North American Studies invites applications for 10 Doctoral Grants
The Graduate School of the John F. Kennedy-Institute for North American Studies invites applications for the academic year 2011/2012. Six academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences collaborate in offering a structured curriculum.

The doctoral program is interdisciplinary in its approach and focuses on those social transformations impacting the United States and Canada at the beginning of the 21st century. Areas of emphasis include domestic and foreign policy, economic development, ethnic identity and relations, as well as recent transformations in media, art, literature, culture, and religion. The language of instruction is English.

Applicants interested in pursuing a doctorate with an emphasis in North American Studies must have a completed degree (M.A. or the equivalent) with above average marks in one of the following disciplines: American Cultural Studies, American Literature, History, Political Science, Sociology and Economics. Grants are awarded for a maximum of three years. Continued funding past the first year is based upon a positive annual evaluation of progress.

Scholarships amount to ca. 1.500 € per month.
It is also possible to apply for admission to the program independently from applying for a stipend. Guest students are welcome to stay for a period of up to one year. Guest students must be self-supporting.

Overview
The School of Environment and Development invites applications for a fully-funded scholarship for candidates from developing countries for Master`s study by distance learning on the MSc Management and Information Systems. The scholarship will cover all study costs including tuition and examining fees and course material costs.

MSc Management and Information Systems
The MSc in M&IS develops the “hybrid” mix of management and information systems skills that we know from experience is essential to the successful and strategic application of information and communication technologies by today’s organizations.
It is designed to develop two groups of participants in developing and transitional economies: functional managers who wish to take greater control over, and make a more direct contribution to, change in their organizations via the development and implementation of information systems; and information systems professionals who wish to improve the success rate of the information systems they develop or use, and who may also wish to upgrade their management skills and knowledge.
The programme is offered by IDPM`s Development Informatics Group, with staff members contributing to the University`s Centre for Development Informatics.

Who studies on this programme?
The MSc M&IS programme is available through distance learning so that practitioners can study while continuing to work in their ongoing professional roles, in the public, private and civil society sectors, or in roles in international organizations, agencies or NGOs. Students work alongside their MSc study, and complete the programme part-time, typically in about two-and-a-half years.

Who is eligible to apply for a scholarship?
The scholarships are intended to support students from developing countries who would not otherwise be able to study for a UK qualification. Applicants should:

Be a national of and resident in a developing country of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America or Oceania.
Have at least two years` work experience in a post relevant to their MSc M&IS studies.
Hold a UK second class honours, upper division, or above, or its international equivalent, in their Bachelor`s degree.

European Master Scholarships in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics, Erasmus Mundus

The aim of the European Master in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics (FUSION-EP) programme is to provide a high-level, multinational, research-oriented education in fusion-related engineering physics, in close relation to the research activities of the partners, together with a well-integrated language and cultural experience. The combined and harmonized teaching & research of the 7 universities offers a broad range of competences in the field of fusion science and engineering physics. The Joint European Masters Programme offers a genuine European opportunity for Master level studies in a field which is of crucial importance to solving the urgent and vital problem of world energy supply.

In view of the expertise of the partners, the programme offers three programme tracks to the student: Plasma physics (fusion-oriented); Computational methods in physics; and Instrumentation and Radiation. The programme structure is combined with a mandatory stay for each student at two universities in two countries: semesters 1&2 at University A; and semesters 3 & 4 in B. Semesters 3 & 4 are in a particular track.
During semester 4 students will also attend a one month long winter school at the ITER site (attendance is compulsory). After semesters 2 & 4 a summer event is organized (attendance is compulsory) in which tracks and Master thesis topics are proposed for Master 1 students Master 2 students defend their thesis at this event. Student mobility is an inherent part of the programme structure and philosophy.

No difference is made between third-country students, EU students, grantees and non-grantees. Applicants (students and scholars) from third countries (whether or not applying for a grant) will be subject to a well-defined selection procedure aimed at achieving high quality.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
Per academic year Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available for FUSION-EP students from third countries are available. Nationals coming from all countries other than the 25 EU Member States (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia), the EEA-EFTA states (Island, Liechtenstein and Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia and Turkey), who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries are considered “third-country nationals”.

The VIBOT Master is divided into four semesters designed and developed to ensure a clear and structured educational progress in the field of computer vision and robotics, fully integrated among the three universities of the consortium:
* semester 1 (UB): fundamentals on image processing, sensors and acquisition, mathematics and computer sciences, are taught (basis) ;
* semester 2 (UDG): improvements on image processing and pattern recognition, complements on computer vision and medical imaging and an introduction on robotics are delivered (reinforcement);
* semester 3 (HWU): high-level processing and methods are introduced for real-time implementation and integration of vision and robotics (capitalization);
* semester 4 (research lab or company): research training in an applied or academic context (going further)
The overall objective is to start from science fundamentals and low-level image processing, and then to introduce mid-level image processing, computer vision and applications in medical imaging and to end with robotics and high-level integration so that the main methods and algorithms in the state-of-art of computer vision and robotics (through both a theoretical and applied point of view) are covered.
An induction week is organized each year in September during which the enrolled students are informed about the programme, the assessment and the rules. The induction week also permits new students to meet second-year students or former VIBOT students.

who are already studying at Cambridge are only eligible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if they are applying for a new course of study (e.g. a one year ‘MPhil only’ student may apply for funding to continue on to the PhD). Candidates already studying at Cambridge who are not applying for a new course of study (e.g. have already started their PhD) are not eligible to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

The Ideal Candidate
There is no one template for a Gates Scholar: each scholar is different and brings something unique to the programme.
However, when selecting Gates Scholars, the Trust looks for students with enthusiasm, robustness of intellect, a willingness to engage and an appropriate humility that comes from an awareness that nothing is ever really simple.
In particular, Gates Scholars will be driven by the values of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which include a commitment to reducing inequities and improving lives around the world. The Foundation’s mission is to increase opportunity and equity for those most in need, particularly in the areas of health and education, often through the use of science and technology.
The Trust expects a good match to be made between the applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and what Cambridge has to offer. Successful applicants will have the ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline while in Cambridge, with a strong aptitude for research, analysis and a creative approach to defining and solving problems.

Competition for admission to the University of Cambridge and for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship is intense.
The University of Cambridge is normally ranked in the top three universities worldwide. It typically receives over 9,000 applications for graduate study from non-British applicants, approximately 1,700 of whom take up their place at Cambridge.
Once applicants have applied for admission and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, the Trust asks academic departments in Cambridge to rank their very best candidates. A shortlisting committee then applies the four main criteria of the scholarships to produce a final interview list. Gates Scholars are selected after interview.
Value
A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge, namely:

the University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate rate*
a maintenance allowance for a single student (£12, 500 for 12 months at the 2009-10 rate; pro rata for courses shorter then 12 months)
one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
A discretionary contribution towards the costs of supporting dependants at Cambridge (upon application).

Once in residence, Gates Scholars may apply for financial help with the costs of attending conferences, undertaking fieldwork and other activities.
*The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students and applicants should see the Graduate Studies Prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities, the Trust will not pay these fees
Interview Process
All candidates shortlisted for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship attend a 20-25 minute interview. The interviews are conducted by a panel of three to five members, knowledgeable in a general way about the candidate’s field of study.
Candidates are be asked about their work: why it excites them; what they know about the broader field of which it is part; why it is important; why coming to Cambridge will help them with their research or build on their earlier educational experiences. Also, do they understand that higher education brings privilege and opens opportunity for the future; what do they intend to do with the benefits they’ve had; how do they see themselves contributing in time. Candidates may also be asked questions of a probing intellectual or ethical dimension, to which there are no ‘right’ answers.
Interviews for candidates from the United States who have not previously studied for a degree at the University of Cambridge are usually held in Annapolis, MD at the beginning of February for entry in the following October. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted before the Christmas break. The Trust normally interviews about 100 US candidates and, after interview, awards about 30 Gates Cambridge Scholarships, depending on the total number of awards available in that year.
Interviews for candidates from all other countries (and for candidates from the United States who have previously studied, or are currently studying, a degree at Cambridge) are held in Cambridge and are either conducted in person or by telephone (depending on the candidate’s location) in late March. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in early March. The Trust normally interviews about 100 candidates and, after interview, awards about 50 Gates Cambridge Scholarships, depending on the total number of awards available in that year.
All candidates are informed of the results of their interview within a week.

International Doctoral Program (IDP) in Energy Science

The international Doctoral Program in Energy Science is offered to provide foreign students and researchers, who have a Master’s degree (or equivalent), an opportunity to further their studies toward a Doctoral degree at Kyoto University. In this Doctoral Program, Japanese proficiency is not required since students can obtain the necessary credits by choosing ones among a variety of subjects presented in English and their research works are also supervised in English. An evaluation of eligibility for admission will be made on the basis of the documents submitted to our School Affairs Office.
Eight students will be admitted each year with a scholarship from the Japanese Government.
Scholarship

Allowance: 155,000 to 158,000yen per month for at most 36 months (subject to change depending upon the annual budget of each year)

MSc OpSciTech is a unique European Master`s Course providing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage of the field of Optics, from upstream scientific aspects to engineering and applications in major sectors of the economy. Offered by six top-level academic partners in five countries, it receives financial support from the European Commission and is supported by major industries such as Alcatel-Lucent, Philips, Saint-Gobain, Thales, Zeiss or ASML.

Learning Objectives and outcomes
Students enrolled in the two-year programme will study in two different countries of their choice, spending one year in each and offering the opportunity to acquire 60 European Credit Transfer System units (ECTS) per year. Students are trained for technical or scientific positions in academic or industrial environment specialized in optics or using optics. PhD studies are a natural extension of the Course.

Erasmus Mundus grants for non-EU students
OpSciTech is one of the Master Courses selected by the prestigious Erasmus Mundus framework of the European Commission through which students from non-European Uni0n countries are eligible for two-year grants of € 24,000 per year.
For 2010/2011, a total of 10 Erasmus Mundus grants were available for these students (“general category”) and additionally 1 or 2 specifically for students from “special windows”, namely Western Balkans and Turkey.
EM grants are awarded on the basis of merit by the European Commission under proposition of the OpSciTech board.

For whom does this apply?
Students from non-EU countries are defined as:
nationals coming from all countries other than the 27 EU Member States
who are not residents of any of the above countries
who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.
Erasmus Mundus grants for European students
For 2010/2011, a total of 8 Erasmus Mundus grants of maximum € 23,000 for two years were available for students from the 27 EU members, or from the AELE – i.e. from Iceland, Liechtenstein or from Norway – on condition that their institution of origin was not a Partner of the OpSciTech Consortium. EM grants are awarded on the basis of merit by the European Commission under proposition of the OpSciTech board.

Admission requirements and criteria
Applications for OpSciTech are jointly handled by all partners of the consortium on this website.
Applicants should have a BSc or BEng comprising significant exposure to physics and optics fundamentals. Other criteria to be taken into account are awards, external references, details of earlier projects, and proof of English proficiency.

Master Scholarships, Color in Informatics and Media Technology (CIMET), Erasmus Mundus, Europe

The CIMET Consortium, composed of four European Universities renowned within the color research community, offers a two-year Master Course Color in Informatics and Media Technology .
CIMET offers three areas of specialization: Color Imaging Science, Spectral Color Science and Media Technology. These fields, being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on the Information Society Technologies, require specialists and specialized competencies.

The CIMET curriculum is intended for top level graduates in physics, optics, imaging science, computer science, mathematics, or any discipline pertaining to the quantitative description of color, with a fluent knowledge in spoken and written English. Courses are structured according to the ECTS with 120 credits acquired over four semesters of full-time study.

Students and scholars’ applications will be performed online via the CIMET Application Sever or directly on http://labh-curien.univ-st-etienne.fr/MasterCimet/neu/app/index.php.

The server is open early autumn each year. All the information sent by students will be accessible to the administrative coordinator as well as the academic coordinators of each university. Documents required for your application must be uploaded on the server. Selected candidates will be required to send the full paper application by post or express mail for verification.

The following documents will be required of each applicant to be uploaded on the server:
1. A Curriculum Vitae (written in English) stating the main personal information (birth name, birth date, citizenship, address, …) the studies since high school (degrees, institutions, grades) as well as any professional experience and any other relevant information.
2. A personal motivation statement, written in English, describing the reasons for application to the Master CIMET. The statement must also indicate your preference among the two universities proposed for the first and second semester, as well as your preference among the two universities proposed for the third semester (i.e. for the first and second specialization).
3. Copies of transcripts or other academic records that give proof on the undergraduate and first graduate studies, including credits and grades achieved in each single subject. Documents from outside the consortium countries must be either in English or in original language accompanied by a certified English translation. Depending on the home countries, applicants may be asked to provide Certificates of Authenticity issued by recognized diplomatic or administrative authorities. (only for students’applications)
4. Two letters of recommendation (written in English). If it is not common practice in your country to be able to open the recommendation letters, either ask your referees to send them directly to master.cimet@univ-st-etienne.fr and if not possible, do give us the details of your referees whilst we are waiting for the letters by post. 5. A certificate of language proficiency in English or a letter from your University as explained above. (only for students’applications)

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for non ec_erasmus_mundus_new-EU Students (Category A)
For 2011-2013 Course, the CIMET Master will have about 8 or 9 Erasmus Mundus scholarships for non-EU students (called category A students).

Top 10 students in the selection receive a scholarship of 24 000€ per year. Applications to Erasmus Mundus scholarship is managed through the classical student’s CIMET application procedure.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for EU Students and non European students* (Category B)
From 2010 on, In the framework of Erasmus Mundus, new scholarships called category B are available.
These scholarships are devoted to European students and third country students* having stayed in EU countries for more than 12 months prior to their application.

For the academic year 2011/2013 CIMET Master Course offers 6 or 7 Erasmus Mundus scholarships for category B students. Selected students will receive a scholarship of 10 000€ per year. Again, applications to Erasmus Mundus scholarship is managed through the classical student’s CIMET application procedure.
Please note that Category A scholarships should be considered as “full scholarships” covering all necessary costs of the student during his/her study period in Europe while Category B scholarships have to be considered as a “financial contribution” to the student’s costs.
