Two PhD student positions in Computer Science. These positions are in the area of hybrid knowledge representaiton and reasoning, planning and execution monitoring.

About the positions. The main task of the students will be to perform world-class research on hybrid knowledge representation and reasoning, and hybrid planning and plan execution monitoring, for robotic systems. Hybrid in this context means that the robot is capable of inferring new information about its environment from a variety of information of different nature. For instance, the robot will consider flexible temporal requirements (e.g., serving food while it is warm, but not too soon after the previous course) together with causal requirements (e.g., serving a meal satisfies the goal of feeding the guests) and resource constraints (e.g., dishes from the previous course must be cleared as space must be made for the new course). Such requirements should be upheld both during planning and on-line execution monitoring.

European Master Scholarships in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics, Erasmus Mundus

The aim of the European Master in Nuclear Fusion Science and Engineering Physics (FUSION-EP) programme is to provide a high-level, multinational, research-oriented education in fusion-related engineering physics, in close relation to the research activities of the partners, together with a well-integrated language and cultural experience. The combined and harmonized teaching & research of the 7 universities offers a broad range of competences in the field of fusion science and engineering physics. The Joint European Masters Programme offers a genuine European opportunity for Master level studies in a field which is of crucial importance to solving the urgent and vital problem of world energy supply.

In view of the expertise of the partners, the programme offers three programme tracks to the student: Plasma physics (fusion-oriented); Computational methods in physics; and Instrumentation and Radiation. The programme structure is combined with a mandatory stay for each student at two universities in two countries: semesters 1&2 at University A; and semesters 3 & 4 in B. Semesters 3 & 4 are in a particular track.
During semester 4 students will also attend a one month long winter school at the ITER site (attendance is compulsory). After semesters 2 & 4 a summer event is organized (attendance is compulsory) in which tracks and Master thesis topics are proposed for Master 1 students Master 2 students defend their thesis at this event. Student mobility is an inherent part of the programme structure and philosophy.

The VIBOT Master is divided into four semesters designed and developed to ensure a clear and structured educational progress in the field of computer vision and robotics, fully integrated among the three universities of the consortium:
* semester 1 (UB): fundamentals on image processing, sensors and acquisition, mathematics and computer sciences, are taught (basis) ;
* semester 2 (UDG): improvements on image processing and pattern recognition, complements on computer vision and medical imaging and an introduction on robotics are delivered (reinforcement);
* semester 3 (HWU): high-level processing and methods are introduced for real-time implementation and integration of vision and robotics (capitalization);
* semester 4 (research lab or company): research training in an applied or academic context (going further)
The overall objective is to start from science fundamentals and low-level image processing, and then to introduce mid-level image processing, computer vision and applications in medical imaging and to end with robotics and high-level integration so that the main methods and algorithms in the state-of-art of computer vision and robotics (through both a theoretical and applied point of view) are covered.
An induction week is organized each year in September during which the enrolled students are informed about the programme, the assessment and the rules. The induction week also permits new students to meet second-year students or former VIBOT students.

To advance research goals at the consortium, we are looking for applicants who
(1) show a drive to investigate a core question in cognitive neuroscience which can be theoretical (e.g., perception, attention, memory) or more clinical in nature (e.g., dementia, neurofeedback in locked-in patients);
(2) are motivated to use and/or help engineer cutting-edge methods of data acquisition (physics) and data analysis;
(3) enjoy the (technical) challenges of working in an integrative, multidisciplinary environment. It is funded by the European Commission, and operated by a consortium of four leading European institutions: the Central European University in Budapest (Hungary) as coordinating institution, the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) in Spain; the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam, located in The Hague (Netherlands); and the University of York in the UK.

The European Commission's Erasmus Mundus program provides scholarships to outstanding students from within and outside the European Union to attend Mundus MAPP and to visiting scholars to participate in teaching and research. NOHA Mundus Scholarships for third country nationals

Deadline: December 15, 2008

INTRODUCTION

The NOHA European Master's in International Humanitarian Action has been selected by the European Commission among the first Erasmus Mundus masters courses for five years. This implies that the European Commission will grant scholarships to highly qualified third-country graduate students and scholars to students to follow the NOHA Mundus Masters Course, to scholars to carry out teaching and research assignments and scholarly work in the NOHA universities participating in the Course. Third-country graduate student

Third-country graduate student means a national of a third country other than those from EEA-EFTA States and candidate countries for accession to the European Union; who has already obtained a first higher education degree; who is not a resident of any of the Member States or the participating countries (EEA-EFTA States and EU candidate countries for accession); who has not carried out his or her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or the participating countries.

The amount of the student grant is EUR 35, 600. Each grantee will receive EUR 1,600 each month for living costs during the 16 months duration of the program plus a fixed amount of EUR 10,000 to be paid in two instalments of EUR 5,000 each per year.

Third-country students eligible for receiving an Erasmus Mundus scholarship fall into two different categories: one general category in which grantees can come from any third country and one specific category ("Asian windows") in which funds are earmarked for nationals from specific Asian countries.

With regard to the general category NOHA consortium will reserve a 13 to 18 places for third-country students and 3 to 4 places for third-country scholars every year.

With regard to the specific category ("Asian windows") the NOHA consortium will have the possibility to select 8 or 9 additional Asian students every year.

Third-country scholar:

Third-country scholar means a national of a third country other than those from EEAEFTA States and candidate countries for accession to the European Union; who is not a resident of any of the Member States or the participating countries as provided for in Article 11; who has not carried out his or her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or the participating countries; and who has outstanding academic and/or professional experience.

The amount of the scholar grant is EUR 13, 000. Each scholar will receive EUR 4,000 each month for a period of 3 months and a fixed amount of EUR 1,000.

Third-country scholars eligible for receiving an Erasmus Mundus scholarship fall also into two different categories: one general category in which scholars can come from any third country and one specific category ("Asian windows") in which funds are earmarked for a scholar from China.
