Master Scholarships, Optics in Science and Technology, Erasmus Mundus, Europe

MSc OpSciTech is a unique European Master`s Course providing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage of the field of Optics, from upstream scientific aspects to engineering and applications in major sectors of the economy. Offered by six top-level academic partners in five countries, it receives financial support from the European Commission and is supported by major industries such as Alcatel-Lucent, Philips, Saint-Gobain, Thales, Zeiss or ASML.

Learning Objectives and outcomes
Students enrolled in the two-year programme will study in two different countries of their choice, spending one year in each and offering the opportunity to acquire 60 European Credit Transfer System units (ECTS) per year. Students are trained for technical or scientific positions in academic or industrial environment specialized in optics or using optics. PhD studies are a natural extension of the Course.

Degree
Each graduate is awarded the Master`s degrees of the 2 institutions involved in his / her individual study path.

  • TU Delft/Technische Universiteit Delft: Master of Science in Applied Physics / Ingenieur
  • FSU Jena/Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena: Master of Science in Photonics
  • Imperial College London: MSc in Applied Photonics
  • Université Paris-Sud 11 and Institut d`Optique Graduate School, Paris: Master in Optics, Matter & Plasma/Master en optique, matière et plasmas, co-accredited also with Ecole Polytechnique
  • Warsaw University of Technology / Politechnika Warszawska: Master in Automatics & Robotics specialized in Photonics Engineering / Magister w dyscyplinie Automatyka i Robotyka ze specjalizacj w Inzynierii Fotonicznej

PhD positions in Technische Universität Kaiserslautern

The State Research Centre for Optics and Material Sciences (OPTIMAS) invites applications for funded Ph.D. positions supported by the Carl Zeiss Foundation. The whole program consists of eight interdisciplinary research projects. Each of the eight projects will employ two doctoral candidates, one in each of the two partner research groups. The positions provide monthly stipends for a fixed term of three years. Following you find those positions that are still available.
A successful candidate should hold an M.Sc. or equivalent qualification in the indicated scientific area or a related research field. Applications with the usual supporting material should be submitted ASAP to the leader of the participating research group.

PhD Smart XUV Optics

The Faculty of Science and Technology (700 faculty members, 1100 students) offers a range of bachelor and master courses (NanoTechnology, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technical Medicine). The faculty’s research is organized in three of the university’s interdisciplinary research institutes: MESA+, MIRA, and IMPACT. These institutes increase the vitality of research by enabling collaboration between programs and disciplines, by providing shared facilities, and by attracting funding for joint projects. They also provide a conduit to industrial and other external partners.
Ph.D. (f/m) Smart XUV Optics
The Laser Physics and Nonlinear Optics group is looking for a highly motivated student to carry out an exciting new research program. In this research program, which is part of the Smart Optical Systems program of the Dutch Technology Foundation STW, we will develop an entirely new class of self-correcting EUV optics. A normal EUV mirror is constructed by depositing alternating layers to create a refractive index contrast that can efficiently reflect light. At extreme ultraviolet wavelengths, these mirrors are susceptible to environmental changes that significantly affect the mirror’s performance. To correct this situation, we intend to replace one of the materials in the mirror with an active material that will allow us to vary the layer spacing dynamically in response to environmental fluctuations. The candidate will be involved in every step of the research, including the development of novel piezoelectric and pyroelectric materials, wavefront-sensing technology for the EUV, and smart algorithms for sensing and maintaining performance at a systemic level.
The prospective candidate will be embedded in an enthusiastic academic environment with world-class fabrication and testing capabilities. The candidate will work closely with leading industrial and research groups. The student will be based at the University of Twente (NL). However, the student is also expected to spend substantial amounts of time at the FOM institute for plasma physics Rijnhuizen (NL), Carl Zeiss (D), and DESY/FLASH (D).
