PhD studentship in theoretical combustion, UPMC, France

At University Pierre et Marie Curie Paris 6, Turbulence group
Field(s): fluid dynamics
Application deadline: Jun 01 (Tue), 2010

Address: Institut Jean Le Rond D'Alembert Université Paris 6 case 162 4, place jussieu 75252 Paris Cedex 05
Job description: This position would concern theoretical/ numerical modelling of combustion dynamics.
The aim of the modelling work is to establish physical-sound mathematical models which are capable to shed some light on present issues for reliable design of combustion. An unresolved fundamental issue is the relative importance of hydrodynamics (turbulence) compared to chemical kinetics on the combustion process.
First, the mathematical and physical structure of the advection-reaction- diffusion equation that is typical for combustion phenomena will be studied.
In a second time, the complete compressible Navier-Stokes equation and the modelled reaction-diffusion equation previously analysed will be coupled. The work will use various experiments as basis for verifying the modelling. The experiments will be mainly from experimental research carried out at the department by the means of a rapid-compression machine.

Research Studentship in High Strain Rate Mechanical Engineering

University of Oxford - Department of Engineering Science

We wish to appoint a suitable candidate to the above post which is available for 36 months. The project will investigate the high strain rate properties of PVC.You will have a 1st class, upper second or equivalent degree in engineering, physics, materials science or related discipline with enthusiasm for academic research. The ability to plan and execute a novel research project working independently within a wider research team is essential. Experience in mechanical testing of materials, finite element modelling and high speed photography would be advantageous.

The project will be supervised by Dr CR Siviour, informal queries should be directed to clive.siviour@eng.ox.ac.uk.

Remuneration will be 14200 pa in 2010/11 (and will increase in subsequent years) and fees will be covered for UK and EU nationals. Additional fees may be payable for overseas nationals.

PhD Scholarships in Offshore Wind Energy - Technical University

PhD Scholarships in Offshore Wind Energy
Wake Effects in Wind Farms
Technical University of Denmark - DTU Mechanical Engineering

Two PhD scholarships are available at DTU Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark in the field of offshore wind energy. The department has a well-proven research tradition in wind energy. The department is strongly involved in ocean energy research through the Statkraft Ocean Energy Research Program, a collaboration between Statkraft AS, DTU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and University of Uppsala. The two scholarships are supported by Statkaft AS through this programme.

Starting date is 1 April 2010.

Project 1: Wake Effects in Wind Farms An existing CFD model for studying three-dimensional flow fields and wake effects in wind farms will be further developed. Computations will be carried out for flows about blades of modern wind turbines clustered in farms. The computing code will be validated against existing measurements from both laboratory and field measurements. The computations are expected to give detailed information about basic features of wind turbine wakes, including turbulence properties and vortex structures, and used to clarify the influence of wake effects when air flow is passing by a row of wind turbines. The model serves in particular to analyze and verify the validity of the basic assumptions employed in the simple engineering models. Furthermore, the results may aid in achieving optimal designs of rotors as well as in the establishment and planning of wind parks.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Strong skills in scientific computing, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics and C/Fortran/Matlab programming are required as well as a keen interest in offshore wind energy. Documented knowledge or experience within wind energy and/or offshore engineering will be considered as an advantage.

Approval and Enrollment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
